Six years ago I organized a couple of hate crimes awareness events here in Las Vegas for something called the Fag Bug. Erin Davies, the owner of the now-famous VW car, is touring the country once again and this time she’s got a documentary about her 2007 tour (which just so happens to feature Las Vegas).
So, what is the Fag Bug? Well, Erin came home to find her VW vandalized with anti-gay hate speech after attending a National Day of Silence event. Ironically, the Day of Silence is about highlighting the hate crimes and bullying LGBT people face and how those bigoted acts silence them. Instead of being silenced by the hate speech on her car, Erin christened it the Fag Bug and set off to visit each of the Lower 48 states (she’s currently on a quest to get to Alaska and Hawaii).
When I found out about Erin, her car, and her mission I was deeply inspired to help. I had just launched my sister site, The Sin City Siren, only weeks after Erin’s journey began. We talked frequently and I worked to create events here that would do her mission justice. Now, many of those she interviewed here in Las Vegas — as well as people from across the country — are featured in her documentary, “fagbug.”
Right now, I am working to organize the Day of Silence screening of her documentary. I will keep you posted, but you can also get updates on Facebook as well as RSVP (and share with all your friends). If you want to get the full history of my involvement with the Fag Bug, check out this hub page I created on SCS.
There are two things that Erin needs to be able to come here and I need your help.
- Erin’s speaking fee is $500. PLEASE DONATE NOW to help me keep this event free so we don’t have to turn anyone away at the door by charging admission.
- I can’t do this alone! Please volunteer to help make this an awesome event! Sponsorships are available!
Thanks so much for your generosity and help!
